“Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen” Dr. Brene Brown

Therapy is a very unique relationship, and you may feel confused about how to decide on the best therapist for your needs. I will try here to give you a sense of my experience, my approach, and a little about my personality, to help you decide if I may be a good fit for your needs.

I am not the type of therapist who just listens and nods. I am supportive and empathetic, but direct and action oriented. I will help you explore your past experiences, but then help you transform your present life to enable you to move in new directions, achieve the changes you desire, create healthier habits, attitudes, and outlook.

Here are the areas in which I can help you get clarity, feel supported, and move forward:

Chronic or Acute Health Issues: Whether you are coping with the fear of a newly diagnosed condition, or have been managing a chronic illness for years, I can help you reduce the stress of illness and re-define your sense of self. If you are struggling with uncertainty, fear, or feeling overwhelmed, therapy can help you manage your symptoms, reduce depression and anxiety, and learn mindfulness and relaxation skills.

I have specific experience working with clients experiencing infertility, miscarriage, complicated or traumatic birth, and post partum depression. I also have experience working with individuals living with dialysis and transplant.

Perfectionism: I use my training with Dr. Brene Brown to help my clients explore issues of worthiness, identity, burn out, and shame. This work is about cultivating empathy, authenticity, vulnerability, shame resilience, compassion, and connection. I use her videos, curriculum, and my extensive training to bring her amazing work to life in my client sessions.

Burn Out or Compassion Fatigue: I know first hand what medical and healthcare professionals are facing every day. I have worked in a medical setting for 28 years, and worked in a hospital throughout COVID. I have seen up close and personal how the stress, trauma, moral injury, exhaustion and anger can feel overwhelming.

Divorce or Major Life Transitions: I can help you navigate major decisions, find clarity, and provide support as you “stand at the door of a professional or personal challenge trying to muster the courage to enter into uncertainty, and embrace the vulnerability and promise that lies ahead” (Dr. Brene Brown)

Your life transition may involve a decision about becoming parents, or remaining child free. Or it may be a new career, or re-location. Regardless of what challenges you are facing, I believe that we must also have some understanding of how our past experiences have shaped us and their influence on our current lives, so I help people integrate this crucial understanding to sustain healthy relationships that will give the connection, joy, and belonging that we all need to thrive.

Frequently asked questions about Individual counseling

  • We will meet weekly for 45 -50 minutes via a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. Our first few sessions will be about getting to know one another, understanding the issues you’re managing, and making sure you feel comfortable with me and my style. We will set goals for our work together to help you achieve the changes and transformation you want. I let my clients lead where we go, but I always have something ready to teach, explore, or challenge so our time together feels effective and rewarding.

  • There is no one size fits all when it comes to therapy. Some of my clients get the support and clarity they need in a few sessions. Others want ongoing support and deep exploration of past issues. You will decide how much and how long you want to continue in the therapeutic relationship. Many clients finish their work with me then return periodically when they hit a life challenge and need some additional support. I am happy to be there when needed!

  • Shame is the “deeply painful belief that we are not worthy of love and belonging”. Dr. Brown explains shame resilience as “the ability to recognize shame when we experience it, and move through it in a constructive way that allows us to maintain our authenticity and grow from our experiences.” Learning about how shame shows up in our lives, and how to recognize it and move through it has provided profound transformation for my clients.

“Sometimes the bravest and most important thing you can do is just show up.” Dr. Brene Brown
